What am I doing wrong?
Published on April 17, 2008 By alphabyte In Skinning

I am trying to put together the start menu for my next WB, and I noticed this ugly black border all around my start menu (seen on the righthand side of the start menu in the screenshot).

I have blur enabled and disabled the OS shadow.  I am using Skin Studio 6.00.003 and WB 6.09[g].[b].135.  (Also, I have tried this in the latest non-beta version of WB6 and this black border is still there.)

I have tried playing with many of the settings in Skin Studio 6, but I cannot get rid of that annoying border.  What am I doing wrong?

Any help or suggestions would be most appreciated!

I haven't verified this but Cavan told me that setting in SKS6 did nothing ... yet.Still just eye candy. alphabyte; complete your skin in SKS6, once done and happy then open in SKS5, from tree menu select Start Panel, then set Hide shadow to enabled and save.

Cavan1: Thank you for the info. I really appreciate all the tips and suggestions. Very much appreciated!

No problem.

One more tip, when doing multiple quotes, do like so, of course without the spaces in tags.

[ quote ]I haven't verified this but Cavan told me that setting in SKS6 did nothing ... yet. [ quote ]Still just eye candy.[ /quote ]

Hi everyone,

Let me first thank everyone who has stopped by to help me and give me suggestions. I appreciate each and every one of your tips, ideas and bits of information.

I have tried opening my skin in SKS5, hiding the shadows there, and then re-opening it in SKS6. Unfortunately, this did not work for me. I made the appropriate change in SKS5 (I set HideShadows=1), saved and applied the WB. Much to my agony, the black border still persists.

I have checked the pixels around my borders and there are no stray pixels outside of the frame and drop shadow.

Also, I tried to manually add "HideShadows=1" to the Top Part of the Start Panel section, but that did not work either.

I guess I will continue to work on the other parts of my WB and hopefully a resolution to my problem will arise.

Cavan1: Thanks for the quote tip as well.

Thank you again to everyone. Your help is much appreciated!

maybe add ´HideShadows=1´ in the code editor? Never tried that in the start panel...

Can't in SKS6 as there is no Start Panel section. It looks like they plan on it being part of code for each start menu part but is not complete yet. If you check code in SKS5 HideShadows is the only code in Start Panel section and does not show in any of the other parts code section. As of now can only see code for each part/section at a time, can't open complete skin code as can in SKS5.

First open in SKS5 and check that hide is still enabled, apply another skin then go back to yours, or reapply your skin two or three times, this is one of those settings that does not always change after just one apply. Not sure why just always seems to need a kick in the butt to take.

Cavan1: I checked to make sure that HideShadows=1 in SKS5. I applied some other skins (Luster, RogueProtonG, Leo, etc...) and then applied my skin with the black border several times to no avail, as the default OS shadow remains. Sigh... Thanks again for all your time, effort and help!

alphabyte; go to my site WWW Link, click email and send me the skin and I will see if I can get it working. Can't promise to get to it tonight but tomorrow I work only half a day.

Strange...I cant get them TO show...not at all.Only difference is,I never once opened my skin with SKS6.

Little experiment...open your skin with SKS5,save it as some other name(like you were going to make a new skin off of it),and apply that one and see if they are gone.

Cavan1: Thank you for your generous offer. How do I send you an attachment through the Wincustomize email system? Thanks again!

IR: Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it (loaded my broken WB into SKS5, checked to make sure HideShadows=1, and saved it as another file name), but unfortunately, the default OS shadow was still there.

Thank you for offering your suggestion. Much appreciated!

I posted this in the SkinStudio 6 Beta Feedback thread since I saw that one first.

Go to your skin folder and open up XPStuff.xp with notepad.
Look for the following section and make sure it says "=1" after HideShadows.

[StartPanel]
HideShadows=1

If its not there just add it.

(I tried to change the setting it in SS6 and it did not work for me. )
I hope that helps.
